Description
**Dante's Inferno Illustrated Edition Book - 1885**

This is a hardcover illustrated edition of Dante's Inferno, translated by Rev. Henry Francis Cary from Dante Alighieri's original work. Published by Belford, Clark & Co. in Chicago and New York in 1885, this "New Edition" features illustrations by the renowned French artist Gustave Doré. The book appears to measure approximately 10" × 7" × 2" based on the hand holding it for scale reference.

The volume displays characteristic Victorian-era publishing quality with an ornate reddish-brown cloth cover featuring embossed decorative borders and gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. The cover illustration shows classical figures in Doré's distinctive engraving style. Interior pages show Doré's famous detailed engravings, including the visible portrait of Dante Alighieri. The binding appears intact though shows age-appropriate wear consistent with a 138-year-old book, including some edge wear and patina to the cover.

The condition appears good to very good for its age, with no obvious major damage visible, though some minor wear and aging is evident. Books from this publisher and era, particularly those featuring Gustave Doré's illustrations, are sought after by collectors.
